Helping Homeless Families

8/7/2019

Women and children are living nearby in a homeless shelter in East Elmhurst, Queens, NY. They need toiletries, such as: toothpaste, bars of soap, shampoo, lotion, and bodywash. We are collecting these items and donating them to the women because they don't have money to buy these items themselves. There are about 100 families in this shelter. It would be helpful if anyone could donate any of these items for us to deliver to the women. They also need strollers, for two women with babies. If you can donate money to help these women and children, we will use it to purchase and deliver the things they need.

We can receive the supplies from you either at the Garden School at any of our Sunday Meetings from 11am-1pm (starting again 9/8) or by calling President Thomas Raffaele at 718-779-3374 to deliver them to his home in Jackson Heights, Queens, NY.

Here are some photos of our recent donation.

Thomas Raffaele, president of Queens Ethical (second from right in photo), was a speaker at the event. The event was hosted by the Tri-State Sri Lankan Muslim Community, "To honor the victims and lives lost in the tragic terror attacks on churches and hotels in Sri Lanka." Victims of all other attacks on people of any given faith were also honored. The event celebrated what brings us together, and denounced division based on hate and fear.

We will be meeting at our usual Sunday location of the Garden School (33-16 79th Street, Jackson Heights, NY 11372) on 4/28 from 11am to 12:30pm. We will then (weather permitting) head out in pairs to ask residents to request the NYC Parks Department to plant free trees! Homeowners are entitled to this service, and we hope many will request the service. We will be informing residents about it and giving them flyers detailing the simple steps they need to go through to make the request.

The more people we have walking with us from door to door, the more of an impact we can have! This would help homeowners make the most of empty dirt plots in front of their houses where trees had previously died. This planting of new free trees would help the environment and make the neighborhood look nicer. Every day enormous numbers of vehicles are driven through Queens, polluting our air. Additional trees would help clean the air of these pollutants.

So, please join us for this activity! You can see the information flyer we will be passing out below.
